Workplace
violence is violence or the threat of violence against workers. It
can occur at or outside the workplace and can range from threats
and verbal abuse to physical assaults and homicide, one of the
leading causes of job-related deaths. However it manifests itself,
workplace violence is a growing concern for employers and
employees nationwide.
Between
1993 and 1999 in the United States, an average of 1.7 million
violent victimizations per year were committed against persons age
12 or older who were at work or on duty, according to the National
Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). In addition to the nonfatal
violence measured by the NCVS, about 900 work-related homicides
occurred annually. Work-place violence accounted for 18% of all
violent crime during the 7-year period.
Training is a critical component of any prevention strategy.
Those who attended the Permian Basin S.T.E.P.S Network meeting
heard different things from, such as the 5 "P's" and learning the
lesson of the "Wet Monkey Syndrome". Throughout the allotted time
for the other speakers, those in class made comments later when
many came up to me and said, "It was just like you said." As the
other speakers spoke, those in class retained what I had told
them.
Training is necessary for employees, supervisors, and the staff
members of each office that may be involved in responding to an
incident of workplace violence. Training sessions can be conducted
for the agency’s Human Resources Division, Security, and Employee
Relations staffs, enabling employees to
get to know experts within the agency who can help them when
potentially violent situations arise.
Employees and supervisors seek assistance at a much earlier stage
when they personally know the agency officials who can help them.
I make sure and cover the types of training that have proved effective in
preventing violence and other threatening behavior.
